Gdansk University of Technology launches new supercomputer – Triton – Polish Radio

As explained by Dr. Eng. Jerzy Proficz Information Center Academic Computer Technical University of Gdansk, the new university is actually a cluster supercomputer, which is a group of computers connected to each other. In this case, the CPU 2616 creates a cluster. The whole is placed in more than 30 cabinets and weighs approx. 15 tons. Triton is capable of performing 1.2 trillion calculations per second and is ten times faster than the computer that previously worked at the university.
At the moment Polish Triton is the fastest computer. However, it will be only for the next few weeks – until the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy in Krakow start a computer named Prometheus, whose computational power is expected to be approx. 1.7 trillion operations per second.
With Triton at the Technical University of Gdansk starts Academic Centre of Excellence for Research Infrastructure Manufacturing Applications (CD NIWA), through which the equipment will benefit researchers and students from universities Pomeranian. – We expect also passionate about working with local as well as businesses interested in creating all kinds of applications – Proficz said.
He added that the equipment will be used in many fields, ranging from physics and chemistry, and medically ending. He explained that the device will be used, eg. To perform virtual experiments, which, thanks to the computer you can make a lot cheaper and faster than in reality. – Virtual experiments do not require chemicals or special equipment, just a mathematical model of such experience – he explained.
Predecessor was Triton eg. Used to analyze recordings of gastrointestinal endoscopy. Computer very quickly fished the pictures images that suggest the occurrence of adverse changes in the body. – Of course, the final analysis of the recordings He made a doctor, but – thanks to the initial selection made by the computer, he had a very easier task – pointed Proficz.
Supplier supercomputer for the Technical University of Gdansk was a consortium of companies Megatel and Action. The equipment was purchased through a grant to the Innovative Economy Operational Programme 2007-2013 for investment in the development of the infrastructure of science.
Value of the project amounted to 40 million zł, of which 30 million was allocated for the purchase of a computer, and the remaining 10 million – for work required for the Centre of Excellence NIWA, including the creation of platforms for the production of applications and the creation of a team of specialists, who will advise partners CD NIWA.
