A team of researchers from Tufts University under the direction of Dariush Mozaffari checked the effect of sugar-sweetened beverages on the risk of death. The scientists analyzed 62 studies carried out between dietary 1980-2010, which were attended by 611 971 people from 51 countries. As a result, it created the first global report on the number of deaths caused by sweeteners used in beverages.

The study included almost all the available types of drinks – carbonated, non-carbonated, fruity, sport, energy, sweetened iced teas and more. It turned out that the consumption of these drinks in a given period of time (years 1980-2010) contributed to the approx. 133 000 deaths due to diabetes type 2, 45 000 due to cardiovascular disease and 6,450 from cancer. This frightening statistic shows how dangerous are artificially sweetened beverages sold in stores.

– In many countries of the world have experienced a significant number of deaths due to one factor diet – sugar-sweetened beverages. Global priority should be a significant reduction or elimination of sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet – said Dariush Mozaffarian.

Studies have shown large discrepancies between different populations. For example, the impact of sweetened beverages on the Japanese after 65 years was negligible, and very high for Mexicans under 45 years of age. Generally, Impact of sweetened beverages on the health of young people is clearer than the older ones.

– In some countries, changes in diet can be difficult, due to the difficult availability of fruits and vegetables. The only method of protection is to limit their consumption. There are no health benefits from consuming sugar-sweetened beverages, and a potential threat to life is enormous – said Mozaffarian.

The researchers believe that the reduction in the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages could prevent thousands of deaths each year.
