The health effects of the Chernobyl accident – Focus

The problem is that ardent antagonists – documenting posed by side, often contradictory arguments – often evoke the same phenomena and facts, describing them completely different numbers, some of which must be false. However, for the average observer, such a discussion as to which of them are true, it is extremely difficult.

In assessing the number of victims of Chernobyl has no major discussion on the number of early deaths that occurred after the accident. Two people died in the same crash, one killed by the explosion, the second as a result of a heart attack. A third person died the next morning as a result of thermal burns (scalding steam). Among the Chernobyl NPP workers and firefighters who received in a short time, high doses of radiation to the whole body 28 died in the first four months after the accident as a result of acute radiation sickness. Hence, the number of early deaths caused by Chernobyl is 31.

Among the other 106 people who received high doses from 1300 to 5300 mSv, they recorded 19 deaths (in general, no relation to the radiation) in the period since 1987 2006. [1]. Although only three cases of deaths could be related to radiation, but the reports included in all of them to a group of Chernobyl victims. [2]

The average doses received by residents nearest European countries after the Chernobyl accident were small, not exceed 0.3% of the dose normally received during the life from natural sources and do not cause any health effects. In Poland, the average radiation dose in the first year after the accident was 0.27 mSv.

For comparison, it is worth knowing that the average annual dose of radiation caused by cosmic rays, soil radiation, radiation elements (such as potassium K-40) contained in our bodies and natural sources in Poland is 2.5 mSv, as well as the standard dose of the world. But in many parts of the world, and doses are several dozen times higher and it does not cause any ill effects. For example, in Finland doses are 7 mSv / year and the Finns live longer than five years for Poles and are healthier. Likewise, high doses are in Sweden or in the region of the Massif Central in France.

The basic dispute concerns the health effects among people who were in the course of failure within several to several tens of kilometers from the power plant, received small doses and were evacuated or continue to live in the areas around Chernobyl. Antinuclear organizations claim that the number of deaths in this population is huge, from 10 thousand. by 100 thousand. up to several million. This information is by these organizations for years distributed, despite the lack of any documentation.

From the first moments around the Chernobyl catastrophe began to grow frightening myths have been reported hundreds of thousands of victims of mass epidemic of cancers and horrible genetic changes. American tabloid National Inquirer a few days after the accident posted a drawing of a two-meter-sized chicken allegedly caught near Chernobyl by Soviet hunters. “The New York Post,” the 30th April 1986., Four days after the accident, gave on the first page: “Mass grave of 15 thousand. bodies pushed down by bulldozers to nuclear pits. ” Chernobyl deaths proliferated in the media like mushrooms after rain, and the pictures and movies as victims of radiation were shown children with leukemia or affected by severe developmental disorders.

Meanwhile, studies of international organizations such as the United Nations Scientific Committee. Effects Atomic radiation (UNSCEAR), world Health Organization (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) showed consistently that the radiation in the areas evacuated on average, smaller than the natural radiation in many parts of Europe and the world, where for centuries lived and will live people.

doses, which will receive over 70 years of age residents of different countries caused by natural radiation, shown above next dose in the Chernobyl area, caused by natural radiation and the additional radiation caused by Chernobyl. You can see it, that lasted evacuation was unnecessary. People who remained injunction against the evacuation in highly contaminated sites around Chernobyl will receive from radiation-induced failure of an additional 310 mSv over 70 years of age. This is a dose smaller than the difference in the doses over the life of the inhabitant of Finland (510 mSv) and Polish (below 200 mSv). Doses in the areas of low, medium and high contaminated are LESS than the average doses in Finland, in large parts of Sweden, France and other countries. And yet no one proposes to evacuate residents of Helsinki and the Massif Central in France!

EU: Without the consent of the parents persons under 16 years of age do not benefit from Facebook – Interia

Today, April 26 (10:31)

the European Union in 2018 prohibit the use of Facebook and other sites social persons under 16 years of age, if they will not receive official permission of their parents or legal guardians – writes the “Finacial Times”. How the EU plans to enforce the new law?

the European Union does not want the Internet users under the age of 16 have used social networking sites without parental consent

/ © 123RF / Picsel

Members of the European Parliament issued a regulation assuming that each social network will have to verify that the person signing up for an account is aged 16 or over . If you are younger – must obtain parental consent. Has not been established, however, the method of verification. The responsibility was shifted to social platforms. If until 2018 did not prepare appropriate solutions – the EU can not impose a penalty of 4 percent. their revenues.

Most of the social networking sites makes it impossible to open an account young Internet users, who are less than 12 years. Of course, nobody checks the true age of the child assuming an account – just to confirm that we have finished 12 years and you can set up an account. Meanwhile, people aged 13 to 16 regularly use social networking platforms such as Instagram and snapchat (the exact number is difficult to estimate, due to the fact that minors often do not provide true age). According to research firm eMarketer, in the UK 10 per cent. Facebook users is in the age group 12 to 16 years.

The creators of social platforms informally, in discussions with the “Financial Times”, admit that there is no way one hundred percent a verification of age when setting up an account or log in or next to the site. “Once again, the legislator pushes responsibility to a private company” – they add.

Luke Skałba: Samsung KS7000: the cheapest TV’s flagship line SUHD 2016 – Gadzeto Mania

SUHD Samsung’s flagship line of televisions Samsung. In 2016, she went through a refresh. There were some interesting technology, most of which are also present in the cheapest representative of the series.

In this article you will learn:

  1. how much is the cheapest Samsung SUHD
  2. what distinguishes a TV SUHD
  3. is it worth to buy a TV with HDR
  4. what is Quantum Dot

A year ago, Samsung pompously announced the launch of a completely new generation of TVs – SUHD . Quite a few in the course of marketing mush, but the fact is Samsung’s flagship series offer excellent image quality, brilliantly reproduced colors and great contrast. Price also, unfortunately, was the space.

The proposal of the Korean manufacturer for 2016 further refines the existing models. Interestingly, cheapest model SUHD diagonal of 49 inches and without the curved panel is available in a quite normal price & amp; hairsp; – & amp; hairsp; 4999 zł . I decided to see what it offers and whether it is worthwhile to consider the cheapest model of the most expensive series of Samsung.

>

TV HDR do not have to cost a fortune

HDR TVs are new. This type of screen displays more detail in extreme lighting conditions . So the sky is not overexposed, and the dense shadows of the dark corridors are full of detail.

Thanks to the panel HDR contrast is higher, whiter white and light reflections and surface texture more realistic. It is necessary to sufficiently high maximum brightness of the screen.

Older TVs have the brightness of 100-200 nits. If this parameter is SUHD while until 1000 nits . Samsung ensures that thanks to the virtual sunrise can really hurt us.

Quantum Dot 64 times more colors

Standard TV (even with a resolution Ultra HD) are able to cover only a maximum of 33.5% of color seen by the human eye. Some new TVs are trying in various ways to increase this value. Devices with the so-called. wide color palette (wide color gamut), cover 42 & amp; hairsp; – & amp; hairsp; 57% of what we see our eyes.

One solution broadens the color space to use quantum dots . They are located between the light emitting display without backlight, and the color filters. Their size does not exceed while a few nanometers.

The first devices using this solution appeared on the market in 2013, but their life was short, because the technology was not yet a polished enough .

With the success of quantum dots applied only in the first generation Samsung TVs SUHD. These are semiconductor nanocrystals that under appropriate conditions emit light of different colors.

The color of the issue is here addict the size of the dots. This technology allows you to display 1 billion colors . Traditional TVs (and almost all other screens) display their “only” 16 million.

So we have a 64-fold jump. What does this mean for the user? Colours of the TV are more saturated and better mapped, and tonal transitions smoother.

It should be noted, however, that the to enjoy the wide palette of colors and a HDR image, you must have the appropriate materials to play . Currently, these standards support plate blu-ray 4K UHD and files with some professional video cameras. Fortunately, all indications are that type of streaming services Netflix, working on the implementation of the operation HDR and WCG.

Innovative technologies

According to the Korean giant TVs SUHD should also interested customers do not reproducing the material in the latest standards. These devices are in fact engine remasterujący image of the worst sources and & amp; hairsp; – & amp; hairsp; simplifying & amp; hairsp; – & amp; hairsp; enhancing its quality.

Samsung gives particular emphasis to the improvement of dark scenes. There is even a special technology called Precision Black , which optimizes the contrast and backlight so that the blacks were the most black and shine.

coating itself the screen is made in the technology Ultra Black , which is supposed to build inspired eye moth . It definitely reduce the reflection of light in brighter areas.

is it worth it?

Samsung SUHD, is undoubtedly the some of the best TVs on the market . They offer a lot of interesting and forward-looking technologies. Sorry you have for all the news a lot to pay. However, if you choose the smallest model of the cheapest sub-series, it becomes apparent that the price is not all that space.

But it is worth considering before buying a few times, because If all of these standards do not we use . SUHD, the TV future … what you think interpreted quite literally and wait until more sources using them fully.

Health effects of Chernobyl. What is a fact? – Market Health

30 years after the Chernobyl disaster, the effects do not seem so apocalyptic as shortly after. Various sources variously estimate the number of victims of the disaster.

According to the United Nations Scientific Committee. Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) killed 62 people. The report of the Chernobyl Forum (the forum included representatives from WHO and the UN) estimates that as a direct result of the disaster 31 people died and more than 200 fell ill with radiation sickness.

Prof. Wade Allison of Oxford University estimated the number of deaths caused by cancer because of Chernobyl 81. On the other hand report Physicians Against Nuclear War estimates the number of cases of thyroid cancer arising because of the disaster on 10 and 000 suggests the possibility of a further 50 000 cases. Among the residents of contaminated sites is not observed an increased risk of cancers other than thyroid cancer.

How radiates Chernobyl
Meanwhile, in a much more frequent mining disasters killed tens and even several hundred people. The explosion at a toy factory in Thailand (1994) cost the lives of 213 people, the explosion of the tank with chemicals in Bhopal (India, 1984) of 3849, a record for the number of victims of a series of disasters there in China (1975) caused the death of 230,000 people. Even more victims entailed some natural disasters – the most deadly was the cyclone Bhola 1970, which hit the coast of Bangladesh, killing 500 000 people.

The Chernobyl accident caused radioactive contamination of the area on the border of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia respectable on 125 000 to 146 000 square kilometers, a radioactive cloud spread across Europe. However, the highly contaminated area around the power plant has an area of just half a square kilometer.

The measurements made outside the Chernobyl May 10, 2001 year by the radiologists of the Warsaw University of Technology registered the radiation power of a dose of 1 mSv per year – such as now Warsaw. The average dose to the whole body, which as a result of the Chernobyl failure was a resident of Polish in the first year after the accident amounted to 0.3 mSv. In 70 years it will probably be about 0.9 mSv. During this time, the radiation dose from natural sources will amount to about 170 mSv.

nuclear bombs gave more radioactive fallout
Although the morning of April 28, 1986 radiation monitoring station in Mikolajki recorded the activity of isotopes radioactive air increased up to half a million times the dose received by people was only a few times larger than derived from natural sources.

the fallout from Chernobyl, not only was not the only one that passed over the Polish, but it turned out to be much smaller than in the case of test explosions of nuclear weapons in the late 50s and 60s (for a total of 2,419 explosions).

Test Marshall Stanmore – Interia

If you want to do something good in music, it is impossible not to refer to the classics. Marshall knows this, which is to offer Bluetooth speaker strikingly reminiscent of an old guitar amplifier or a small stove transistor. Is Stanmore game as good as it looks?

Marshall Stanmore

/ press materials

Who is afraid of the largest digital platforms, cable TV and TV stations? Service called Netflix, available from January in Poland. We had a chance to meet with the artists and talk about how it will look “television of the future”. If at all it will be even … read more

At the beginning of the appearance, because this is just as impressive as the sound itself. As already mentioned, the speaker reminds the device stage and doing it well. There’s no exaggeration. The structure is wooden and finished artificial leather with a characteristic texture. On the front we have a beautiful and sparkling color grille with the logo of the manufacturer. At the top brass plate with analog knobs and bass tones and switch power on / off. There are also two buttons for selecting the audio source and the LED, which is the source informs. Everything was done perfectly and with great care, so Stanmore will be perfectly presented in most interiors. We have to choose the three color options – black, white and brown.

The speaker is difficult, however, lumped together with other products of this type. All through its size, weight and power. Imagine that the whole weighs little more than 5 kg, and its dimensions are 350 x 185 x 185 mm. It can be easily transported by car, and even stubborn to move, but … hard to call it mobile. There you will take it camping or under the bare sky, because – apart from uncomfortable dimensions – require a permanent connection to the power supply. It turns out that Stanmore is substantially stationary bulky loudspeaker.

Inside the Marshall includes two tweeters and a subwoofer. They provide a total power of 80 W. This is enough to publicize a large living room. I have tested the device in a room with an area of 18 m 2 . Comfortable volume – acceptable to the neighbors on the 22nd – was when the knob on the device indicated 2-3 on a 10-point scale. Store was so impressive – like sound. Speaker is doing just anything. Very pleased will be lovers of electronics or hip-hop, but, of course, a real treat awaits lovers of guitars. It is hardly surprising – the brand is committed. Up and down can also tune with knobs and equalizers built-in multimedia players.

Marshall-Stanmore

/ press materials

Marshall Stanmore is a thoroughbred appearance and racial tone. The most interesting, however, that in such a closed classical form new solutions. In the end, we are dealing with a Bluetooth speaker! But all this did not interfere. On the contrary. With a banana on your face will be to fire the machine and connect it with your smartphone, TV, iPad, iPod, mp3 player CZG turntable. I assure you.

That’s right. What exactly can be found in Stanmore and how can you use it? In addition, we have Bluetooth mini jack output, which means that we attach to the speaker cable plenty of other devices. This one is not the end. Optical output enables communication with a TV or Apple TV. There’s even a CAR! The only thing missing USB to be able to simultaneously charge the smartphone.

I have already mentioned that tested Marshall hardly portable speaker. It’s hard to compare it with small devices competition. I would treat it as a beautiful, loud, versatile and great-sounding alternative to the various audio systems. An alternative that is not only a great game, but simply an adornment except any interior.
