Chapel pobitewna on the Champs-Grunwald was built on the site of the Teutonic camp: it’s almost certain discovery of the archaeologists.
Evidence of this accumulation around her finds military, the remains of the winning camp – assessed the scientists on this year’s study of the battlefield.
On the Fields of Grunwald ended in week archaeological research involving scientists, archaeologists – employees Museum of the Battle of Grunwald in Stębarku and prospectors from Denmark, Norway, the UK and Polish.
This year’s survey covered an area of about 110 hectares and was conducted under the motto ” search of the Teutonic camp. “
– As a result of this year’s work we were able to win almost 400 objects of historic buildings. Of course, not all are associated with the Battle of Grunwald, because we found it on the monuments from later periods, but more than 200 artifacts can without doubt be considered as witnesses the battle of Grunwald. We found a very large collection of arrowheads and bolts (38 copies), three hatchets or axes, 4 pieces of spurs, a fragment of the blade and the hilt of his sword, pieces of glove armor, and not specified yet how many coins Teutonic and Jagiellonian – lists the head of archaeological and historical museum Battle Grunwald Piotr A. Nowakowski.
He stressed that “material value of these monuments is negligible, while their educational value should be defined as very high”. – Thanks to them shall complete knowledge of medieval weaponry Polish military and religious – assessment Nowakowski.
Director of the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald Dr. Simon Drej he pointed out that to draw definitive conclusions it is still too early. – I can say with great probability that we were able to confirm that pobitewna chapel was erected on the site of the Teutonic camp. Evidence of this accumulation around her finds military, which suggests that there has been here a bloody and jammed clashes, which undoubtedly was the conquering camp knights with black crosses – he added.
This year in the study participated Swedish scientist prof. Sven Ekdahl of the Polish-Scandinavian Research Institute, which was different than Polish researchers hypothesis concerning the main battle. At the opening conference of the study, he was saying that the real battle site was not located in the east and south of the village Stębark, in the so-called Valley of the Great Stream – as claimed by contemporary Polish historians and archaeologists – but to the east and south of the village of Grunwald.
International archaeological research Grunwald – carried out since 2014. – they will continue also next year. – There is still a lot of area to check, and interesting results encourage us to further study – explains Dr. Nowakowski. – It must be remembered that each hectare searched – with negative results – reduces us to an area further archaeological work and introduces you to find the graves of knights from Grunwald – adds director Drej.
