By 2020, the population of wild animals may be reduced to 67 per cent. – warns the international environmental organization WWF announced Thursday the “Living Planet Report 2016″.
According to a recent report from the world wildlife Fund in the years 1970-2012 populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish have declined on average by half. The next decades will not be better – according to experts by 2020. from the Earth can disappear two thirds of the population of vertebrates.
“This is the extinction, which we have launched is the fastest in Earth’s history,” – said during the presentation of the report in Warsaw, Dr. Przemyslaw Nawrocki.
“the Wealth of nature is disappearing. The data contained in the report are alarming because the animals are a huge part of the ecosystem services on which we really depend. The changes also affect the air quality, water quality, amount of food and speed of climate change” – sums up the expert of WWF Russia, James Skrzypczyk.
As adds, it is very important to counter the trend now. As he explained, it is necessary to deploy “solutions that will allow (…) to use the planet’s resources in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, particularly in the areas of food, energy and financial flows”.
die mainly as a result of human activity that degrades and exploits the Land on a scale unprecedented in the history of civilization, experts noted the report by the world wildlife Fund.
Among the biggest threats to species that are listed in the document, acknowledged the loss of habitat, largely due to human agricultural activity, as well as the degradation and over-exploitation of nature – in particular, the result of overfishing. Threat pollution, spread of invasive species and diseases.
People live on credit – this is one conclusion from a report by the world wildlife Fund. From cited therein according to the organization Global Footprint Network, says that to ensure the natural resources and ecosystem services used by humans need biological potential, equal to whichever of 1.6 Earth. This means that our planet has more than its ability to regenerate, – the authors of the document.
perhaps we are witnessing the next great extinction – suggests the expert of WWF. This is due to the fact that – as pointed out by the authors of the report – we now live in the era of antropocenu, that is a new geological era in which Earth is dominated by one species – Homo sapiens (which is already confirmed in the geological traces).
“it is Very difficult to predict whether changes have occurred slowly and gradually we were losing the resources of the Earth, if it comes suddenly to a sharp tipping system as we know it. This is especially niepojące in the case of climate change," warned Dr. Nawrocki.
in Addition to threats, the WWF report provides solutions to improve the environmental situation and endangered species.
“we Have to change short-sighted approach to the problems of the world on a strategic approach that will serve future generations, and to effectively protect our planet’s resources, their rational use” – suggests the expert of WWF.
the world wildlife Fund points to the need to preserve “natural capital”, i.e. the expansion of the global protected area network.
Another determined by the direction of equitable access to food, water and energy. An important element of the report is the change of direction of financial flows. “In contradiction with this purpose, many financial institutions continue to invest significant amounts of harmful and devoid of sustainable activities such as coal mining, agriculture, destructive of the environment and extraction of oil”, – the report says. “We look at the business as a part of the solution," said during the presentation of the report James Skrzypczyk.
Experts draw attention to the need for “more sustainable consumption”, as well as sustainable food production. Currently, agriculture occupies about one-third of the total land surface and requires a wear of nearly 70%. fresh water resources, – to the report.
the report drew attention to the fact that the burning of fossil fuels is the major anthropogenic factor affecting climate change. “It would be better if the vast majority of fossil fuels remaining in the earth” – suggests the expert. At the same time indicate the direction of transformation of traditional systems of energy supply in favour of renewable sources of energy. (PAP)
