Solar Impulse 2 ready for further travel – Onet.pl

Solar Impulse 2 is a plane powered by solar energy, which last year set off on a journey around the world aimed to show everyone that electric planes are the future of the aviation industry.

the plan failed, however, and during the next stage of the journey from Japan to Hawaii, during which established the record for the longest flight by plane lasting 4 days and 21 hours, the machine caught a major accident. This long journey caused the destruction of the battery as a result of overheating and Solar Impulse 2 is grounded.

After nine months repair work and the execution of several test flights to check the functionality of all systems, the machine is ready to continue the journey. Aircraft engineers not only exchanged in the batteries completely new, but also improved the operation of the cooling system to prevent repeated overheating of the battery.

Data start next flight is not yet known, because the team is waiting for appropriate weather conditions that do not harm the delicate machine coated cells fotowoltanicznymi. It is also unclear yet where they will be plane, as the available pilots are four possible locations such as Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles or Vancouver. Their selection will depend on the current weather, giving pilots a choice of re-routing in case the conditions proved unfavorable.

Of course this is only the first leg of the journey. After its completion, the Solar Impulse 2 will then to New York, and from there fly to Europe or North Africa, to complete the journey in Dubai, which is where it began in March last year.
