Aspirin treatment for Alzheimer’s disease? – Interia

Aspirin, the most widely used drug for colds, can help in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s.

It is extremely rare, but can happen to virtually anyone. The researchers found that the sudden onset of depression may be an early symptom of a brain tumor. read more

Aspirin, which is known for centuries acetylsalicylic acid, derived inter alia, willow bark, is one of the most widely used drugs in the world. Tests on both the small cold and fever. In the US alone, it is taking a day to 80 million tablets of aspirin. Recently it confirmed that aspirin is good for the circulatory system, and helps prevent some types of cancer.

A team of researchers from Cornell University and Johns Hopkins University found that aspirin neutralizes the enzyme GAPDH, which is crucial in the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. Several studies have confirmed that oxidative stress GAPDH causes loss of nerve cells. Salicylic acid blocks the transport of GADPH to neurons. That’s not all – are synthetic derivatives of salicylic acid such as HMGB1, which bind GAPDH more effectively.

– A better understanding as salicylic acid and its derivatives regulate the activation of GAPDH, while the discovery of more efficient chemical compounds give hope to create effective therapies against a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases – said Daniel Klessing, head of the research team.

Only dementia worldwide suffer more than 47 million people.
