NASA scientists are impressed. New Horizons spacecraft, which was sent into space in early 2006 just sent photos of Pluto and its natural satellite, Charon. They show high mountain ranges on the dwarf planet and deep canyons at Charon. The dark area in the north of satellites called Mordor.
January 19, 2006, NASA sent into space created by the New Horizons probe each other. It was created to explore Pluto, its moon, Charon, and at least one other Kuiper belt object. The probe has sent back to Earth more photos of Pluto. Scientists were amazed as they saw them. It turned out that the dwarf planet is devoid of craters, which are characteristic for the other rocky objects of the solar system. The surface of Pluto, which is relatively smooth apparently still is shaped not by outside forces, but by processes within the planet. In the pictures sent to NASA also shows high mountain ranges on Pluto. Most likely, they reach even 3,000 meters in height. Equally surprising was the discovery that Charon – natural satellite of Pluto, which until now was considered geologically dead object has on its surface a number of cliffs, canyons and deep trenches. This demonstrates the ongoing geological processes on the satellite.
