belonging to the European Space Agency’s Venus Express probe has gained very convincing evidence that the surface of the second planet from the Sun are still active volcanoes. Their presence so far only speculation, and it seemed likely – now we know almost for sure.
The fact that volcanic activity had a huge impact on the surface of Venus, scientists knew a long time. It still prevails at very high temperature – an average of 480 degrees Celsius – but not combined these conditions with a possible current volcanic activity. The only argument that lava could be quite recently present on the planet in a liquid state were her footprints, found in 2010. Then it was dated to approx. 2.5 million years. In the cosmic scale is “quite recently”.
New arguments for the fact that Venus is – like the Earth – also volcanically active now, the European Space Agency called “the most promising they managed to find so far.” All thanks to the work of the probe, laboriously moving through the orbit of the planet and leading detailed observations of its surface. They are part of the temperature measurements and it is their enthusiasm breathed results in academics.
Venus Express during their flights over the planet located the four areas in which the temperature is very noticeably changes over time. In one, she reached up to 1,526 degrees Celcujusza (over three times more than the average). As the researchers point out, based on radar images acquired technology it had already determined that there are tectonic rifts – and now you can with high probability to say that emerges from these lava, affecting the ambient temperature.
The final proof of the presence of volcanoes on Venus can give scientists an answer to the question about the unusual composition of the atmosphere of this planet. Between 2006 and 2007 it was discovered surprisingly high levels of sulfur dioxide (who later was reduced to a more predictable value). Volcanic activity could explain this anomaly.
