26 teams constructors Mars rovers from 12 countries began the struggle in the second edition of the European Rover Challenge in Podzamcze near Checiny (Świętokrzyskie). The guest of honor of the competition is Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt.
Some areas of the Regional Centre for Science and Technology in Podzamcze Chęciny turned into a Martian landscape. “This right here will face teams representing all continents except Antarctica,” – he told reporters the originator of the idea of competition, the president of the European Space Foundation Lukasz Wilczynski.
The teams will have to perform five competition. The first of these geological played under a huge tent, it lies in the fact that robots will have to dig into the ground and find the hidden sample. Another involves the repair of the reactor positioned on the ground solely by means of the manipulator. The teams will perform this task with only a camera placed on the rover. “This is more important than time will be precise, they are not racing” – explained Wilczynski.
As part of this year’s edition also planned to ride without instruments, machine vision, simulating a situation in which there was a failure camera as well as overcoming inclines. “For the competition we have also crater” – said the organizer. A completely different task affected the scoring will be the presentation of the jeep.
