High on 70,000 km. See giant tornado on the sun. Unusual recording of NASA – News Gazeta.pl

This unusual phenomenon took place between 1 and September 3, 2015 year. It lasted more than 40 hours and the temperature ionized iron particles, which consisted of a tornado, was 2.8 million degrees C. We can see through recording executed by a satellite Solar Dynamics Observatory, which belongs to NASA.

– Huge Sun’s magnetic force turned into kinetic energy and heat – explained Professor Iven Cairns, a physicist at the University of Sydney.

The cause of the Coriolis effect

The coronal ejection could be just one of many ejections of plasma in space, were it not that it occurred in the vicinity of the solar equator. As a result, it took the shape of a tornado. First of all, responsible for the Coriolis effect, which is also present on Earth. It stems directly from the rotational motion of the planet.

– sun, although not a planet, also constantly rotating. Therefore, there will also be seen also forces – said Iven Cairns. This, coupled with the enormous gravity and the mass and height of the burst, which we see in the film, has made it took the shape of a tornado.

Cairns added that tornadoes on the Sun’s surface form is extremely rare. The first of these was recorded only in 2010. A year later, he recorded the SDO satellite vortex plasma five times larger than Earth. Its speed was close to 300,000 km / h – for comparison, the highest wind speed in the eye of the storm on Earth reach 480 km / h.

SDO at the police station for five years

Solar Dynamic Observatory is a satellite of NASA, whose task is to study the dynamics of solar activity. It was sent into space in February 2010 under the program “Living with a Star”.

SDO is always watching the sun and records its images at different wavelengths. Each wave of light is colored in a different color, which also shows the temperature of the material of solar image.

On board is 300 kilograms devices that help to know and understand the sources and structure of the magnetic field of our nearest star, as well as energy conversion processes Sun’s magnetic field in the solar radiation, solar wind and energetic particles from the Sun and the Earth.
