Google blocks the ability to edit maps – all by pissing … – Gazeta.pl

Map Maker, one of the most important functions of Google Maps, has been suspended indefinitely today . On a daily basis it served to correct errors in Google Maps, adding new streets and locations and to enable such projects, such as user-generated map of North Korea (a country until recently was a white spot on Google Maps).

It worked a bit like Wikipedia for home cartographers – in the end, not all locations may be added by Google employees, and the city is, after all living organisms, in which the time comes to change. According to the principle of “Nobody knows the area better than its inhabitants” Google gave all users a tool to do it themselves modify Google Maps. Because of a joke, that’s all changed now.

Android mocks Apple's Fig. Google Maps

In April we wrote that one of the users added in the area of northern Pakistan literally olewające Android logo of Apple. As it turns out Google took this to heart and from today, May 12, switch off the ability to edit Google Maps. In an official statement, , the company announced that the function will remain unavailable until a new system will be introduced moderation and approval of changes.

So far, it worked quite openly – users made their changes which were then manually approved by Google employees. Once a person has already had to his credit a number of the approved amendments, the further changes automatically ended up in the official Google Maps. As a result, Google has not been inundated with thousands of small changes that require approval, and maps were quickly updated. Unfortunately drawing of northern Pakistan shows that this system does not work well …

What next? The ability to edit Google Maps for mobile is the strength of this service, so in the end will have to go back. It is true that Google can hire a legion of new staff to check every little patch, but it is not the best solution. We must therefore wait a bit until the Map Maker is available again …
