Gorilla inhabits rainforest central Africa in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the last 20 years the population plummeted by more than 70 per cent., The biggest influence on the drop had poaching – killing or taking captive apes is strictly prohibited, and although it is still widely practiced.
The IUCN Red List now contains four of the six great apes. The most endangered are the eastern gorilla, western gorilla, orangutan and the Sumatran orangutan orangutan. – The fact that the eastern gorilla – one of our closest cousins - stands on a step away from extinction, it is really disturbing – said Director General of IUCN Inger Andersen.
In the list of IUCN he was also zebra, whose population of 14 years fell from 660,000 to 500,000 individuals. Zebra now lives mainly in protected areas.
The good news is that the giant panda has moved up on the list of the IUCN category of “endangered” to the less dangerous categories of “vulnerable” because its population has increased. This protection effect of bamboo forests that are its living environment.
