Infected wounds heal more slowly and less, which is normally extended hospitalization. In addition, the site of such wounds are often permanent or difficult to remove scar. Extremely dangerous is the infection of large wound, as in extreme cases it can lead to death of the patient.
Typically, it is difficult to diagnose bacterial infection without removal of the dressing, which can be very painful for the patient, and also can lead to scarring . After sampling, laboratory confirmation of infection and takes up to 48 hours. In this case, doctors often prescribe preventive antibiotics before confirmation of infection. In this way they want to protect patients against uncontrolled development of the infection, which is intended to prevent later complications, and sometimes it can save the lives of the most seriously scalded.
However, excessive use of antibiotics, especially in cases where there was no infection, may lead to immunization into no further bacterial strains. On the other hand, antibiotic resistance may later treatment pose a threat to the patient's life.
According to Dr. Toby Jenkonsa, one of the team members, this new type of dressing can contribute to better care for patients with wounds oparzeniowymi, and often will be saved their lives.
