A computer program will help London police fight crime – Science in Poland (PAP)

Perhaps soon the London police will have to give up your intuition and rely on the suggestions of a computer program. Scientists are working on a system that by analyzing the so-called. great dane, I tell the police what to do during a patrol and help in the fight against crime.

The London police has gained an unexpected ally in the fight against crime. These are among others computer scientists and mathematicians from University College London. “We work with the police London to show her that with the analysis of large data we can increase the efficiency of its work, which is to help reduce crime,” – says PAP member of a team of researchers, Kira Kempińska at University College London.

The effectiveness of the police at any given time depend on various factors, eg. What they’re doing, where they’re going, who you talk to cops. “We are using big data, we are able to optimize all these factors,” – explains Kempińska.

Scientists want to build a simple interface that resembles a car GPS that suggest the police where to go, but there will be nothing forced. “If the police will go there – great. If not – we Calculate route and at the next junction again will they argued: turn left. It will be such a two-sided conversation” – explains working in the UK Polish researcher.

Developed by scientists system is a set of algorithms. “We use algorithms from very different industries. They are simply algorithms that have large amounts of data, there are some trends and these trends tell us something about the future. That is the key. We have eg. The algorithms used in seismology to predict the location of an earthquake. It turns out that very easily can be adapted to predict the burglaries to homes. We also have algorithms that are used in the analysis of large texts. We are the algorithms we use to predict crime and optimize the behavior of the police “- describes the interlocutor PAP.

For the purposes of the research project in London built a special center store sensitive data, which is the first such center in Europe created for college. “Security of data that gives us the police, is essential. These are the data of offenders, their addresses, place of current residence. The police obviously do not want such data disclose. Therefore, in the center are different levels of security, there is no Internet, no access to phones. The most sensitive data are kept in a cell on servers, like in prison, “- explains Kempińska.

In New York, we have developed a similar solution, which tells the police where to go or identify people to meet, in order to use prevention. “In New York, the police were at the beginning averse. This required the abandonment of intuition police and all their habits in favor of something that tells them the computer. After a short time it turned out, however, that the system is more efficient than intuition” – says Kira Kempińska.

“Like everywhere there are skeptics and enthusiasts. I think in the case of the London police biggest problem is the lack of appropriate technology. While on patrol police officers did not have access to tablet PCs, the Internet, are not able to connect to the database. Even if we give them this algorithm, This will be difficult if they use it at work “- noted the researcher.

Kira Kempińska results of their work presented at the conference Science. Polish Perspectives, which took place in Cambridge.
