Pokemon Go with ads? Yes and it is for the benefit of players – Spider’s Web

Only a few weeks ago in the pages of Spider’s Web, I reviewed a mobile hard drive comes with network connectivity WD MyPassport Wireless, and now back to the review completely new, refreshed version of the product. Here WD MyPassport Wireless Pro. Still obligatory accessory for any photographer, now even better than ever.

As recently I reviewed the previous generation of the product, and many aspects remain unchanged, I invite you also to read the test WD MyPassport Wireless. In that test, also I described in detail how the process configuration of a laptop / desktop computer. In this test we look at the configuration of the mobile application.

When I heard about the release of the WD MyPassport Wireless Pro, I got the impression that WD had read comments in the preceding text and quickly released a patch. Of course it was not, but it does not change the fact that the company has improved a lot of things that hurting in the previous version of the product.

First of all, the new drive is much better made. Still I regret that we are not dealing with rubber, solid housing a’la LaCie Rugged Drive, but WD MyPassport Wireless Pro feels much more solid product than its predecessor.

retain its compact size, although its proportions are somewhat different for the edges of the instrument that measures 126 mm, and its thickness is 24 mm. the weighs 450 g, or very little, compared to that.

What has changed in the WD MyPassport Wireless Pro?

in addition to the physical proportions, the biggest change is the communication, time away from the wall, and speed of action. I’ll start with a little inside. as WD MyPassport Wireless gave counsel to work without interruption for about 5-6 hours, so WD MyPassport Wireless Pro can stream data continuously for 10 hours, no problem I was able to confirm.

What’s more, the drive can also function as a … powerbanku! He has since built-in battery with a capacity of 6400 mAh, which can charge the smartphone, can recharge the batteries in the eternally dying bezlusterkowcu.

As for the communication and speed of action, the two issues are inextricably linked. WD MyPassport Wireless Pro supports standard Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n / ac in two bands, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, which translates into a very fast transfer of content to the target device, such as a smartphone or laptop.

also, ripping the contents of the SD card is much faster than the previous model. this is because it is based on the USB 3.0 standard, which translates to transfer as much as 800 MB / S. There I conducted scientific tests, but I know that the contents of my 16-gigabyte card landed on the disk several times faster than the WD MyPassport Wireless. so if someone is wondering whether or not to replace the old disk with a new one – it’s worth. for that one reason. Especially if when photographing megapixel monsters, such as Sony A7r II, Nikon D810 or Canon 5DSR.

WD-MyPassport-Wireless-Pro-5

I complained that its predecessor did not have input on other cards, than SD – WD MyPassport Wireless Pro or it is not, but the manufacturer allows the ripped content via USB. So we can connect a memory stick, or eg. A memory card reader, if you use the card format CF or XQD. This is great news for professionals who – finally – are still the target group of customers for the product.

Support WD MyPassport Wireless Pro is extremely simple.

In case we have two buttons. One is responsible for turning on the device, the other for suspicion of battery status (short press) and data transfer from the card / USB (after a long hold). Once the files to copy, transfer the LED flashes, and when the copy is complete, steady light. Super simple but also super-efficient and very helpful when you need to quickly make an extra backup of our data, and just do not have access to a computer.

More than mobile backup. This mobile cloud!

as WD MyPassport Wireless, so the Pro version acts as our own, the mobile cloud. It is a pity that the configuration of the drive through the browser continues to be such a pain in the ass, as it is described in a previous review.

But this configuration of the mobile application is a fairy tale.

We start by downloading WD MyCloud on our smartphone or tablet (Android or iOS, sorry, holders W10 mobile). Then we turn on the drive and choose on your smartphone from the list of available networks that is assigned to the drive (in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). Enter the password that is provided in the box and voila! attached disk .

Then just run the application to connect to a “normal” Wi-Fi network and have access to the Web, when we are at home.

Inside the application, we can manage the space disk WD MyPassport Wireless, connection status, battery charge level, to determine whether the files from the card to be copied automatically, or may prefer to do it manually … the possibilities are really a lot.

as long as the drive is connected to a network, it can also serve us for a private cloud or home media server, when connected to a compatible television – just like WD MyPassport Wireless. we can also write to the contents our smartphone, and even set an automatic backup. WD MyCloud is also linked with other services cloud-based, such as Google Drive or onedrive. What could also be significant for many professionals, MyPassport Wireless Pro is also compatible with the cloud of Adobe Creative Cloud.

However, as WD MyPassport Wireless, so MyPassport Wireless Pro can not “spy” RAW files. In the section “images” we see only reprocessed images, eg. In JPEG format. In my opinion this dispute minus, because the end of the drive will benefit the people for whom it RAW is the main format for photos and certainly would like to have the ability to quickly browse thumbnails of photos straight from WD MyCloud.

If you so reads someone from WD, this … please, Throw in support for displaying RAW files.

Price? Cheap is not …

at the time of writing this review WD MyPassport Wireless Pro is not yet officially available in the Polish distribution channels, but its foreign price is an average of 10% higher than its predecessor. This means that a variant of 2 TB, as tested by me a copy, we will have to pay … almost 1000 zł!

This is a very large amount of money, but still hold the position that WD MyPassport Wireless Pro We are a justified expense. Once we release 1000 zł to disk, but then you may find that it has saved us a skin holding a safe backup copy of the order, for which we could nOT make much more money if something would go wrong.

WD MyPassport Wireless Pro is a hardware & # x119; t for the professional.

This disc, as its name suggests, it is dedicated to members. Equipment for professionals, who have very specific needs and for which such a device, as MyPassport Wireless Pro, it may be salutary accessory at the time of execution of orders, or during travel.

Although still not a hardware perfect I can honestly repeat and emphasize what I wrote on the occasion of review previous mobile hard disk WD – an invaluable accessory, which should land in the bag every photographer.
