Two supercomputers with enormous computing power, an advanced system for storing and sharing data, and lab visualization to help the Polish economy to grow faster than ever before. In Warsaw rushed Technology Center ICM UW art center in Poland computing technologies, the aim of which is to support the Polish business, public administration and science. This is one of the most modern centers in Europe.

Construction Technology Centre ICM lasted three years and engulfed 162 million zł (85% of this amount is EU funds). The main part of the project called OCEAN was the rise in Warsaw’s Białołęka modern data center with an area of more than 6 000 m². This is the most technologically advanced facility in Poland, the “heart” of two new supercomputers of the enormous computing power. Each of them will now meet very specific task:

“Okeanos is the supercomputer Cray XC40 with a capacity of more than 1 petaflop, which will be used for mathematical modeling and generation of large amounts of data;

“Enigma” is Poland’s largest supercomputer for Big Data, manufactured by Huawei. It has more than 8 thousand. cores and has a storage capacity of more than 8 petabytes. The computer is based on the technology of Apache SPARK.

Technology Center ICM UW also has a system for secure storage and data sharing “Faros” with a total capacity of over 20 petabytes and advanced laboratory and large scale visualization rendering. A key element of this place is the video wall with an area of 15 square meters and generating servers based on data from the calculation of the image at a resolution of 8K Ultra HD.

The server room is equipped with the most modern existing systems in the market of security, cooling and power. Particular attention was paid to the issues related to environmental protection. To minimize power consumption, the room of the offices are heated by heat from working in the server computers.

Technology Center ICM is the response of the scientific community to the growing needs of the Polish economy. Server room is used not only for research, but mainly function as a center for business data analysis. Already, the power of the two supercomputers ICM is used, among others, medical research into new drugs, precise weather forecasting, research on new materials for industry, geophysical simulation of changes in the earth’s crust, as well as optimization of transport and logistics. ICM also works with the international civil aviation organization ICAO, analyzing and optimizing grid flights worldwide. The center will also be used as a center for trainee staff in the science of data and their analysis. They will also run classes in engineering calculation, which leads ICM.

 Prof. Marek Niezgódka, Director of ICM UW:

We are witnessing a new industrial revolution, in which a key role in business and the economy begin to play different kinds of data. Business advantages are built by the ability to process this information and perform complex calculations or simulations. That’s why this place has to be a point where science meets business. Technology Center ICM is not only a modern server room, but also the best specialists in mathematical modeling and Big Data. Our ambition and goal is to respond to the growing needs of business and administration; thanks to the expertise of our people and the power of our supercomputers are able to give an answer to almost every question posed by the business.

 Maciej Remiszewski, Deputy Director for ICM UW. Development and Cooperation

Data analysis is more and more applications in the sciences of society. Every man nowadays generate huge amounts of data leaving so different. “Digital footprints” of their activity. These data in conjunction with a massive computational power of supercomputers can give us a whole new perspective to many phenomena and social behavior. And their advantage over classical social research lies in the fact that we analyze the real social behavior, and not declarations.

 Bin Hu, Country Manager, Enterprise Business Group, Huawei Poland:

Poland is one of our key markets. We place great emphasis on the development of innovation through intensive cooperation with the scientific community. We wish to create favorable working conditions for researchers, who will be able to efficiently and at the highest level to pursue research goals in the area of data processing, cloud solutions, modeling and analysis of data and large-scale computing. Science is a very demanding field that inspires us to develop more efficient but also cost-effective solutions. To this end, Huawei invests every year more than 10% of its revenue on research and development.

 Eric Aulagne, sales manager, Cray

Cray and ICM have a shared vision of the convergence of Big Data analytics with the capabilities they provide supercomputers. These capabilities will enable businesses and governments around the world to analyze massive amounts of data that are currently being generated. Integrated environment high performance computers in the hands of the leading data science and scientists will transform data into knowledge needed businesses and the scientific discoveries. This convergence also creates the potential to profoundly transform the economy, as well as various other disciplines, as well as to develop new services, improve security, and more.

Dariusz Skonieczny, Director. Development Comtegra SA

Motion platform for the Centre required a major contribution to integration at every level, from the hardware – network, ending with the program (awareness machines ). The key was the choice of high-level parameters to ensure the efficient interaction of the individual elements. For example, a supercomputer is. Balancing system in accordance with the laws of Amdahl. The achieved result puts the system in the first place among all analogous HPC systems in Poland.
