Polish satellite launched into orbit aboard a Chinese rocket launched studies the stars of our galaxy – says Krzysztof Urbanski.

On Tuesday a quarter after 5 time Polish Hevelius was thrust into space by rocket Long March-4B fired from the Taiyuan Satellite Startup Center.

This is the second Polish scientific satellite constellation of international BRITE. It is named after the famous Gdańsk astronomer of the seventeenth century.

14 minutes after the start of the satellite separated from the rocket released into space using a special ejector and arrived in orbit at an altitude of approx. 600 km from Earth.

– There were no problems with satellite Hevelius. We received information from the Chinese that the process of exaltation by the rocket and the satellite separation from her cunning correctly – confirmed the “Government” Dr. Peter Orléans from the Space Research Centre (SRC), the project manager for BRITE.PL. Engineering. – The satellite was separated on the orbit, on which we depend. mobilized without a problem, was able to contact it in accordance with our plans.

Originally Hevelius had already start under the end of December last year. However, shortly before the planned trip into orbit, during take-off earlier mission, there was a failure of the rocket Long March. Brazilian satellite, which was to get into orbit, rather than in space found in Antarctica. Due to this failure start Hevelius was repeatedly layered. Polish satellite in early August was attached to the cargo rocket that was a few days later into orbit Chinese satellite dedicated to Earth observation – Gaofen 2.

Hevelius is the last of the BRITE satellites in the constellation. Others are already in space. Two Austrian TUG-SAT-1 and UniBRITE, reached into orbit in 2013. In November, they were joined by the first Polish scientific satellite – Lem. The name derived from the name of the most famous Polish science fiction writer chose Internet users in the poll.

this year were sent into orbit Canadian satellites: Toronto and Montreal (the latter is not separated from the rocket.)

BRITE satellites are cubes with a side length of 20 cm and a weight of approx. 7 kg. On the surface they have solar panels. The interior of the box behind a double set of batteries, on-board computer, navigation instruments and a telescope to observe a wide slice of heaven.

The diameter of the hole through which light enters the matrix of the telescope, is 30 mm – the smallest telescopes sent into space. For a few years they will shoot hundreds of the brightest pulsating stars of our galaxy. These data will be scientists need to develop a precise model of the internal structure of stars.

This type of research is very difficult to lead by telescopes on Earth, because these observations are disrupted by waving the atmosphere. Even small telescopes in space – such is available to the BRITE satellites – for accuracy up to several orders of magnitude greater than a great machine on the planet. Polish scientists under the program they want to focus on the study of the mechanism of convection, ie the transport of energy in the hottest stars.
