“Such results no one expected!”. NASA sent the twins into space and the first results – Focus

In experiment participated the brothers Scott and mark Kelly. The first of them is active, and the second is a former astronaut. Scott spent a year on the International space station (ISS) from March 2015 to March 2016. At that time we were both to the test, to check what and how they will change their properties, genetic.

the Main goal is to test how a person is affected by space travel. Despite the fact that we fly into space more than 50 years is still no complete clarity on how we, being so long in space. The results will certainly be important when planning a trip to Mars.

the First results, shown on January 26, at the headquarters of NASA’s Human Research Program, Galveston. Scientists announced that telomeres Scott grew up to be longer than the Mark. Telomeres are parts of chromosomes, which are located at their ends. They serve in order to protect them from damage.

we were Expecting something quite the opposite! – says Susan Bailey, radiobiolog from Colorado State University in Fort Collins in conversation with the journal Nature.

Why has increased, and this is the only change? This we learn in the next year, when a thorough examination. It is, however, not all.

Changes were also observed in the DNA of twins. Scott’s DNA was much less methylation, a process when the methyl molecule added to the DNA chain is a phenomenon attaching methyl groups to DNA. This affects gene expression, that is, read their information.

More detail of the studies on identical twins should be revealed this year.
