Juno probe reached Jupiter – Urania – Progress of Astronomy

July 5, after almost five years of travel, unmanned American space probe Juno arrived in orbit around Jupiter – the biggest planet of the solar system. NASA has confirmed that the operation was properly.

Ground centers NASA, JPL in Pasadena, California and Lockheed Martin of Littleton, Colorado, and received confirmation of a successful maneuver to enter the orbit. The telemetry data were also by aerial Deep Space Network at Goldstone in California and Canberra, Australia.

Before entering the orbit spacecraft Juno changed its orientation so that the main engine was pointing in the right direction and increase the pace of turnover of 2 to 5 times per minute. The main engine of the probe (645 Newton-Leros-1b) was launched at 5:18 Polish time period of 35 minutes, to reduce the speed of 542 meters per second, which led to the interception by the gravitational field of Jupiter and entry into orbit. When this occurred, the probe again turned towards the Sun, so that 18698 solar cells supplied with energy.

Switchable coming months mission team will test subsystems probe and make the calibration of scientific instruments. Phase scientific mission will begin in October 2016., But scientists hope that some systems will collect scientific data already.

The aim of the mission is to better understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter. Using the nine scientific instruments, Juno will explore the mysteries of the interior of Jupiter (eg. If the planet has a solid core), carry maps of the magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the deeper layers of the atmosphere and watch the auroras.

The probe Juno was launched from Earth 5 August 2011. from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida (USA). The mission is carried out by NASA.
