In the last two nights we had the opportunity to admire the largest meteor shower since 2009. As a result, we had to deal with as many as two maxima Perseid. The first took place on the night of Thursday to Friday, and the other another night or from Friday to Saturday. Perseids fall into the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of 60 kilometers per second. Then they burn, so we see a bright glow in the sky. About 2 o’clock on Friday could drop up to 200 meteors per hour or even three per minute.
When it was dark?
In different regions of the country nightfall came at a different time. Dark quickly got around Przemysl. Sunset started there at 19.53. Then the sun sank in the region of Suwalki and Warsaw (from 20.06). The farther west, the day ended later. In Wroclaw, the sunset took place about 20.18, and in Szczecin until about 20.36.
How long did the night? Clearly things got about half an hour before sunrise. On Friday the sun rose early in Suwalki (about 5.01), then in Przemysl and Warsaw (5.15), and at the latest in Wroclaw and Szczecin (after 5.30).
Moon in the middle covered
You have not seen yet Perseid? Nothing is lost. A meteor shower can be admired from 17 July to 24 August. Now, however, the observation will be hampered by the Moon, which in the first quarter moon passes in full. In addition, Perseid has to fall less than during the previous night.
On Tuesday, August 9 Kamil Michoński watched the night sky over the Tatra Mountains. He caught a few “shooting stars.” He created a film which consists of 120 images with the same exposure. Tatra Mountains can be seen from the perspective of Strbske Pleso, Slovakia. Heaven watched hours of 1.20 to 2.20. See amazing effect.
Where to watch?
The darker the place you choose, the greater the chance of noticing “shooting star”. In Poland, they are best suited for this purpose the Masuria and the Bieszczady, because in large cities are only the brightest, most attractive meteors. The rest disappears in the glow of the city.
Curiosities
Perseids meteor shower is associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle. It is the largest known object passes through the orbit of the Earth. Laying the comet’s orbit will make the Perseids will still be able to watch every year for 2000 years. Comet is about 25 km wide, which corresponds to the size of this, through which the dinosaurs became extinct. This cosmic object which was located at a different distance from the Earth. In 1990, he was so close that the world circulated rumors that could strike our planet. Nothing like this has happened, but this does not mean that it can not happen in the future. According to scientists the most close to Earth will be in 2126 years.
